Upon receipt of your order and fabric we check for clarity of your instructions, sufficient fabric, how we will cut the fabric, and figure the pricing. If we have any questions or problems, we will not cut your fabric or process your order any further until we contact you and receive your written answer. If we have no questions or problems with your fabric, we will begin processing your order and mail your acknowledgement.

Delays in completing your order can be largely avoided if you send us a legible and understandable purchase order with a swatch (if possible) of the fabric(s) to be used with the correct side marked. Always mark the correct side of your fabric, even when you think it is obvious. If you will mark the fabric, we assume responsibility for being sure that the correct surface is on top when quilting. If your fabric design is directional, please indicate top of design or we will not assume responsibility for getting it correct

YOUR FABRIC

We recommend your fabric be sent rolled on a tube to avoid wrinkling. A labor charge for ironing our wrinkles is $12 (min.). We will not be responsible for unused fabric unless you specify its return on your order. We have to assume fabric sent to us for processing is free from objectionable imperfections. We will not be responsible for flaws in your fabric. We do examine your fabric as closely as possible while cutting and sewing but will not guarantee flaws will be detected. If an imperfection is found, work is stopped and your order put aside while we contact you and receive your approval. If we are directed to proceed using the flaw, the order is rescheduled as of the date we receive your approval. If we are directed to return it to you or your supplier, you will be charged inspection and handling fees ($12 minimum) as well as the transportation costs. Close inspection of fabric prior to sending it will save you time and money. If your fabric has acceptable flaws, note and mark them and we will try to work around them. When ordering fabric to be drop-shipped to us from your supplier, make a firm request that close inspection must be made of the cut prior to shipping to Smithson's.

OUR BATTING

Our batting is white 100% polyester fiber which is bonded to provide the most puff for a given weight. The normal thickness weighs 6 ounces per square yard. 3 ounce per square yard is available at no charge. A heavier 10 ounce per square yard batting is standard in comforters and is offered as an extra cost item on all quilting except the 1800 series quilting designs. When fabric is quilted for upholstery, a slightly different batt is used. See "Upholstery" below. We also have a thin flannel batting for applications where you desire very little loft.

THREAD

Matching thread is used on all hand-guided quilting unless otherwise specified. Since multineedle machines (1800 series patters) use many needles, several hours are required to change thread color. For this reason, a clear nylon monofilament thread is used which blends with any color.

UPHOLSTERY

Specify when a fabric is to be used for upholstery and we will use 6 ounce per square yard batting with a thin layer of poly foam on top to hold the puff and increase the wearing qualities. A non-woven polyester lining is used for the same purpose. It is to your advantage to have your upholsterer cut your fabric prior to sending to us for quilting. This prevents wasting of quilted material. Just be sure they allow an extra 10% in length and width on all pieces. Quilted fabrics should not be stretched too tightly when applied to furniture since this caused much of the puff to be lost. The batting used for upholstery cannont be used on the multineedle machines. Fo this reason we do not recommend multineedle quilting for upholstery use; also, the monofilament will ravel when cut.
